Phone screws, laptop hinges and glasses frames all call for small drivers, and a precision screwdriver set is usually the first thing people buy when they decide to open a device themselves. The market is crowded with sets that range from a few bits to well over a hundred. This guide explains the main types, what to check in a listing and which kind suits which job.

Three kinds of sets

Most listings on AliExpress fall into one of three groups:

  • Compact pocket kits. A handful of tiny drivers, often with a keychain ring. They suit glasses, small watches and the occasional toy repair.
  • Handle plus interchangeable bits. One comfortable handle with a case of bits. This is the most flexible format for phones, laptops and game controllers.
  • Powered mini drivers. A rechargeable electric unit with small bits. It helps if you open devices often and the repetitive turning tires your hand.

What to check before you buy

  1. Bit types. Phones and laptops commonly use Phillips, Torx, pentalobe and tri-point heads, plus tiny hex or slotted ones for other gadgets. Read the full list in the description, not just the "in 1" number.
  2. Bit size range. A big count can hide many near-duplicates. Look for the small sizes your device needs.
  3. Handle design. A spinning cap on top lets you press down while turning. A thin pen-style body gives control but can be hard to grip for long.
  4. Magnetic tips. Several listings mention magnetic bits, which help keep tiny screws from falling. This is a convenience, not a guarantee.
  5. Material. Sellers often claim hardened steel. That is a seller statement, so treat it as a hint and keep your expectations realistic at budget prices.
  6. Case and organisation. Labelled slots save time when you have forty near-identical bits.

Matching the set to the job

For glasses and watch repair, a small kit is enough and easy to carry. For opening phones and laptops, look for a handle-and-bits set that lists the specific heads your model uses, and consider a set that adds opening picks or a suction handle if the listing includes them. According to the listing, the larger sets in the grid below cover a wide range of heads.

If you open devices regularly, a rechargeable electric driver may be worth a look. The listing states it is magnetic and uses small bits, but power drivers need care: stop before the screw is fully tight and finish by hand.

Common pitfalls

  • Buying by count alone. A 115-piece set is not better than a 25-piece one if you only need three head types.
  • Forcing a worn bit. A cheap bit that slips can round off a screw head. Press firmly and straight, and replace damaged bits.
  • Ignoring the device itself. Some devices use adhesive and clips as well as screws. Look up a guide for your model first.
  • Losing screws. Use a tray or a magnetic mat and keep screws grouped by location.
  • Assuming one set fits all. Check your device's screw type before ordering.

Checklist

  • Do the listed head types match your devices?
  • Is the handle comfortable, with a free-spinning top if possible?
  • Are the bits magnetic, and does the case keep them organised?
  • Do you need extras such as picks, or only drivers?
  • Does the product ship to your country?
  • Did you read the seller's claims as claims, and not as facts?
