An indoor cat that sleeps all day and then runs through the flat at 3 a.m. usually needs more to do, not more food. A good mix of toys gives a cat something to hunt, solve and climb into. Here is how to choose without buying a pile of things that get ignored after a day.

Know which kind of play your cat likes

Most indoor cat toys fall into four groups:

  • Chase and pounce toys: balls, small mice, anything that moves unpredictably.
  • Puzzle and food toys: slow feeders and treat mazes that make the cat work for a snack.
  • Hideouts and tunnels: places to ambush from, which suit shy or very curious cats.
  • Scratch and chew toys: sisal and similar textures for cats that like to bite and claw.

Watch your cat for a few days. Does it stalk your feet, paw at drawers, or sit in every box? That tells you which group to start with.

Puzzle and mixed packs

A feeder box makes meals last longer and gives the brain a task. One listing is a felt puzzle feeder box with three balls and a maze design, shown with 98% positive feedback on AliExpress. A mixed pack is a cheap way to find out what your cat likes: one listing offers 28 or 14 assorted plastic and plush toys, also at 98% positive feedback on AliExpress.

If you buy a mixed pack, give only two or three toys at a time and rotate them weekly. Cats lose interest in things that are always on the floor.

Chase toys for solo play

Cats that are alone for hours like toys that react when touched. A hanging door toy with a retractable mouse on a rope, as the listing describes it, can keep a cat busy while you work. A sisal scratching ball is a simpler option for cats that like to bat and chew. The listing says it is meant for kittens and teeth cleaning; treat such claims as the seller's and do not expect a toy to replace proper dental care.

Tunnels and hideouts

A foldable tunnel is a good first purchase for a shy cat or a kitten, because it is a safe place to run through and ambush from. It also packs flat when you need space.

According to the listing, this tunnel is 96.9% positive feedback on AliExpress. Check the dimensions in the listing against your cat's size, since seller photos often show a kitten.

What to check before buying

  1. Size and choke risk. Small balls and loose parts can be swallowed. Choose pieces clearly larger than your cat's mouth and remove any that start to fall apart.
  2. Materials. Look for stitched seams, firm attachments and no strong chemical smell on arrival.
  3. Noise. Bells and crinkle sounds attract some cats and scare others.
  4. Shipping. Check that the item ships to your country. Some battery or rechargeable toys on AliExpress ship only to a few countries.
  5. Cleaning. Felt and plush get dirty; check whether the listing mentions washing.

Common pitfalls

  • Buying many toys at once. Start with one from each group and see what the cat chooses.
  • Ignoring the cat's age. Kittens, adult cats and seniors play differently.
  • Leaving string or rope toys unattended. Use them only while you are watching.
  • Expecting toys to replace you. Ten minutes of play with you each day still matters.

Quick checklist

  • I know whether my cat prefers chasing, puzzles, hiding or chewing.
  • The toy size is safe and the seams look solid.
  • The item ships to my country.
  • I will rotate toys instead of leaving them all out.
  • I will supervise any toy with string or small parts.
